Day 28 - Churches and Can it Be...
Today was a walking day. I just decided to go and check out whatever sights happened to be on my way. I headed north (I think), popping in and out of numerous churches along the way. While I've never been to Adelaide, I'm not sure how they can claim the title 'city of churchs'. There is a church every 2nd block, usually with some interesting art piece in it.
Ended up going past the Spanish Steps again but I eventually came to Piazza Popolo with a way cool fountain, and surrounding buildings. Out came the guide book which had a vague reference to a couple of Caravaggio paintings. All of a sudden, I got excited. There is only one group of paintings of his that I know of in a church. I proceeded to investigate.
Jackpot!! 'The Conversation of Saul' and 'The Cruifixiation' flanking an Annibale Carracci painting. One of those instances of blind stupid luck but so glad I had a little knowledge of Art History otherwise I would never have sought out this way cool paintings.

Hello again Matt,
Caravaggio, the man of my dreams! How wonderful for you to have seen the works in the settings they were meant for. The Caravaggio show in Sydney in 03 was one of the most inspiring experiences I've ever had.
The Rome part of your trip is just brilliant. Going at this time of year means that you are not fighting through throngs of tourists to get to see everything.
Thanks for the emails. Good luck with the rest of the trip.
Best wishes, Judy
