Berlin Summary - Astronauts and Astronomers
In a really bad, dodgy movie (free drawing to first person to name the movie - post a comment) there was a line about Astronauts and Astronomers. Basically there are two types of people:
1) Those that like to read about things from afar and content with that - the Astronomers
or
2) Those that need to go out, be in 'it' and experience it all - the Astronauts.
Despite an overactive imagination, I probably fall into the later category. Just being in Berlin, history just really seemed to come alive and you just pick up so much from physically being in a place that you just can't get through books and TV (or at least that is me).
The construction in Berlin means the face of it is changing radically so if one was to come back to this place in 5 - 10 years, it would be different again. Only managed to spend about 2.5 days here which really wasn't enough, so many things I would have liked to have done and seen.
If there was only 1 city I could come back to Berlin would be it. Originally I was thinking of giving this place a miss but Kira recommended it as a 'must see' and certainly was. It has also peaked my interest for what other places in Germany would be like.
I think one of the tour guides made an interesting comment. Berlin is half way between Paris and Moscow, and a lot of 20th century history was because of this place. Now with the way the EU is forming, being right in the middle of it may make it a very important center in the 21st century - time will tell.
